The latest class of NASA astronauts is 50% female

sci-universe:

The latest class of NASA astronauts, recruited in 2013 and already in training, will also be candidates for the first trip to Mars, and for the first time in NASA history, 50 percent of them are female.

The class of is made up of eight recruits in total – Josh Cassada, Victor Glover, Tyler Hague, Christina Hammock, Nicole Aunapu Mann, Anne McClain, Jessica Meir, and Andrew Morgan – selected from a pool of around 6,100 applicants. That’s a fierce 0.0013 percent success rate.

The application process alone took 18 months of rigorous medical and psychological testing, and the recruits are now going through two years of training before they’ll officially join NASA’s 46 currently active astronauts.

But what’s really cool is that they’re the first class to be candidates for the mission to Mars. “If we go to Mars, we’ll be representing our entire species in a place we’ve never been before. To me it’s the highest thing a human being can achieve,” McClain told Ginny Graves in an exclusive interview for Glamour magazine at the end of last year.

That training, as you can imagine, is pretty intense, with the candidates learning how to fly T-38 supersonic jets, practicing walking around underwater in spacesuit that weigh 181 kg (400 pounds), and surviving what’s called the vomit comet, which simulates weightlessness through freefall.

They’re also being taught a whole bunch of general survival skills that might help them cope with the myriad things that could go wrong on the Red Planet.

Amandla Stenberg comes out as bisexual

africanaquarian:

gaywrites:

Last night, Amandla Stenberg came out as bisexual in a powerful message via the Teen Vogue Snapchat:

“I wanna thank Teen Vogue for giving me this opportunity, I cannot stress enough how important representation is, so the concept that I can provide for other black girls is mind-blowing. It’s a really really hard thing to be silenced, and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and just mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in. As someone who identifies as a black bisexual woman, I’ve been through it, and it hurts and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable. But then I realized: because of Solange and Ava Duvernay and Willow and all the black girls watching this right now, there’s absolutely nothing but change. We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears, to be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow. I definitely believe in the concept of rebellion through selfhood, and rebellion through embracing your true identity, no matter what you’re being told. Here I am, being myself; and it’s hard and vulnerable, and it’s definitely a process, but I’m learning and growing. Thank you for supporting me and doing this, and thank you to Teen Vogue. This is just the beginning, though; we have a lot of work to do for all women of color. We need more representation in film and television. We need our voices to be louder in the media. And not just women of color — bisexual women, gay women, transgender women, mentally ill women. I’m sick of all the misogyny and homophobia and transphobia that I see around me, and I know you are too. Thank you for listening and goodnight.”

ONE MILLION TIMES YES.

Canada’s first transgender judge named

allthecanadianpolitics:

Canada’s first transgender judge has been appointed to provincial court in Manitoba.

Kael McKenzie, a Crown attorney from Winnipeg, was officially designated a judge on Dec. 17 and will begin his new job immediately.

With his appointment to provincial court, Mr. McKenzie becomes the third openly trans judge now practising in North America. The first, Victoria Kolakowski, of Alameda County, Calif., was appointed in 2010.

Many are calling Mr. McKenzie’s appointment “a Canadian milestone.”

Before his promotion, Mr. McKenzie was a Crown prosecutor for five years in family, commercial and civil law. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2006 and has been an active member of both the legal and LGBTQ communities since, co-chairing the Canadian Bar Association’s sexual-orientation and gender-identity conference from 2012 to 2014.

Mr. McKenzie is also serving as vice-president of the Manitoba Bar Association executive committee, the Manitoba chair of the Canadian Bar Association, and president of the Rainbow Resource Centre – which serves Manitoba’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and two-spirit communities. He also served on the Manitoba Women’s Advisory Council.

Mr. McKenzie was chosen from six candidates by an independent judicial committee that included three community representatives, members of the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association.

USD Professor Leads Silent Protest Against Anti-Muslim Rhetoric – Times of San Diego

antisemitism-us:

A religious studies professor at the University of San Diego
who is concerned about growing anti-Muslim rhetoric has started a
silent protest, with students and faculty wearing yellow stars
marked “Muslim.”

Bahar Davary, associate professor of theology and religious studies,
came up with the idea during her class “Islamic Faith and Practice,” an
introduction to Islam, and her students suggested several designs.

The yellow Star of David is what the Nazis required all Jews to wear prior to the Holocaust. The crescent moon and word “Muslim” draw the connection with today’s politics.

“What it symbolizes is that there have been people who have been made
to be the ‘other’ throughout history,” said Davary, an Iranian-American
whose academic specialty at the Catholic university is Islam.

Gee, if only there were a known symbol for Islam.

I barely even have the stomach to write about this anymore, it’s just too much. I am so tired of people trying to win public sympathy over OUR DEAD BODIES, and somehow I very much doubt they take seriously any actual Jewish warnings of antisemitic rhetoric.

“The Star of David is holy to all three religions.” Uh-huh, but it’s also associated with one of them, and yellow stars are very specifically associated with something really fucking specific

The thing is, this comes with some implied assumptions, all in one compact package:

1. Jews were oppressed in the past, now they’re not, we’re the new Jews.

2. Everybody cares about oppression of Jews, but not about oppression of others.  We need to show how we’re like Jews to get any attention.

3. The Star of David is a symbol of oppression, not of Jews

This all goes with “Jews whine about the Holocaust, the Holocaust wasn’t so unique, but it’s the symbol of ultimate oppression when it’s about us”.

Also, way to ignore that Jews being forced to wear identifying yellow badges was actually a practice that originated in Muslim countries centuries before the Holocaust…

STOP USING DEAD JEWISH PEOPLE AS YOUR CHEAP POLITICAL RHETORICAL DEVICES!

YOU’RE GROSS.

Not to fucking mention this bull suggests that the othering and violence against the Jewish people is somehow neatly tucked away in history and not a very real current threat.

The Magen David isn’t just some random symbol “the Nazis required all Jews to wear.”  It is an important religious symbol to the Jewish people. The Nazi’s didn’t just think it up one day.  The Magen David does not belong to oppression, it belongs to Judaism.  And the yellow star forced on the JEWISH PEOPLE by the Nazi’s belongs to the Jewish history of oppression.

If you support this, you’re being antisemitic and you need to stop.
