A pre-Hanukkah celebration sponsored by the Hillel chapter at York
University in Toronto was interrupted by an anti-Israel student
demonstration, The Canadian Jewish News reported on Friday.
On Dec. 3, supporters of Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) were holding a “silent protest” for
a “YU Divest” campaign, when they noticed Jewish and other
students enjoying a holiday event — in the university’s Vari Hall —
featuring an inflatable Hanukkah menorah and other items, including a
The anti-Israel protesters then began to chant slogans and hand out
leaflets right near the Hillel event, according to the report.
“What was planned as a silent protest turned into chants and the
blocking of the hallways,” Hillel said on its Facebook page. “While
Hillel prides itself on promoting respectful discourse on all campuses,
we find tactics of harassment and intimidation to be intolerable.”
Nothing new here.
Fearing the spectacle would be misunderstood, community representatives last week visited the 22 migrants — including 12 children — who have been housed in the Alpine village since the end of October.
They were shown the frightening masks and given insight into the event’s history with the help of an Arabic translator. The verdict? The newcomers had “lots of fun,” according to social worker Nicole Kranebitter.
The migrants “will now know what to expect when St. Nicholas and the Krampus creatures knock on their door,” Kranebitter added.
She said the next event planned for the families who fled war-torn homelands will be traditional cookie baking.

Following a controversy around its most recent board election, the non-profit group that runs the fanfiction hub Archive Of Our Own (AO3) announced on Sunday its entire board had resigned.
Now the leadership of the Organization for Transformative Works is up in the air.
Andrea Horbinski, a current member of the seven-member board, was up for re-election to two open board seats, but she came in last in the members election. The membership, made up of roughly 8,000 fans who paid a $10 membership fee, voted for Matty Bowers, Atiya Hakeem, Alex Tischer, Katarina Harju, Aline Carrão, and Horbinski in that order.
During a public board meeting on Sunday, the OTW board appointed Horbinski back onto the board to fill an unfinished term on a third open seat not included in the election. Horbinski voted in favor of the motion to re-appoint herself to the open seat, rather than abstaining from the vote. The board meeting came to an abrupt halt after several OTW members voiced their opposition to the decision, pointing out that other candidates got more votes than Horbinski in the election.
This is kinda a mess, but considering a lot of people regularly give over 500K twice a year to the organization, I think it’s important to pay attention. OTW effects not just people with an AO3 account.
Plz save yo shit.
@daiyascenes and for EVERYONE SAVE YOUR BEAUTIFUL WRITINGS
TO EVERYONE WHO WRITES ON AO3:
PLS SAVE EVERYTHING
oh shit, thanks for tagging me. reblogging for all my writer pals. this is worrisome. i do have docs saved of all my work though and i’m working on backing them up on google.
WOAH, time to save my stuff off AO3 in case it shuts down.
SAVE YOUR SHIT, NOW!
YOU GUYS, OTW’s new board members released a statement that AO3 would continue to operate normally. It’s always good to err on the side of caution, of course, but there’s no need for panic like this. Your fics are safe.
“The landmark law was hailed by LGBT rights activists, and the hope is that next gender reassignment surgery will be available.
The surgery is illegal in the communist state, and trans people who want to under go it usually have to travel to Thailand to receive it.
However Tuesday’s legislation will allow those who have undergone gender reassignment surgery to register under the gender appropriate to their gender identity.
With a while to wait, the law will come into effect in the first part of 2017.
The state-controlled website VNExpress, wrote that “individuals who undergo transgender change will have the right to register [their appropriate gender]”.
It went on to say that they would then receive “personal rights in accordance with their new sex”.
The change has been welcomed by LGBT rights activists in the country.
It is seen as the next step towards legalising gender reassignment surgery.”
